It’s said that people’s choices reflect who they are inside, but what about someone’s clothing style and music preference? Think about outfits people wear at a rap or rock concert, or even Coachella. All vastly different, all influenced by music. This is where Jono Stephenson’s motivation for his clothing line begins; with his music.

Having grown up in the small town of Howick in South Africa, made up of mainly retirees, there was little chance Jono would become a music artist. But his mother used her singing, guitar, and piano skills to teach him everything she knew, ultimately leading to his incredible love for music. Far from the music styles taught by his mom, electronic music spoke to Jono like no other genre could.

Jono has always had a dream to be more than just an artist, to venture beyond a life of small town living. A philanthropist in his own right, he has become a successful electronic music artist, founded his own music label, and created a promotion and events business. Now, adding to his repertoire, Jono has officially launched his clothing line.

“There are three aspects to my clothing line. First, I want everyone to know it’s not simply ‘merch’ tied to my music. There’s a purpose behind each line I produce, my end-goal is to give back to the community. Second, my line isn’t some half-hearted, self-serving idea for making money. It came about through prayer and my faith in the Lord. I’m pouring my heart and soul into this project, just like I do with my music. Lastly, I refuse to spend my money on materials outside of Africa. All the cotton for my lines is entirely sourced from African countries, with each piece of clothing being meticulously created with form and function in mind, then manufactured here in South Africa.”

Jono knows that quality is everything, and when someone wants to make a statement, cutting corners isn’t the answer. It would have been much easier, and cheaper, to buy bulk clothing from China where quality is almost non-existent. Instead, Jono ensures his money is kept in South Africa by using cotton only grown in the area even though it’s a little more expensive and takes a little bit longer to be turned into the final product. Each piece is created with combed cotton to remove impurities like short fibers that may unravel when washed, meaning buyers can rest assured that their purchase is going to last. And what better way to adorn his clothing line than with traditional Ndebele artwork? Each piece features colors and patterns inspired by the South African Ndebele people, just one more way Jono aims to keep his clothing line interwoven with South Africa.

“I like knowing that my clothing line is helping to create jobs here, which hopefully helps improve the lives of my fellow South Africans.”

Jono’s end-goal is for his music and clothing line to be synonymous with each other, for someone to make the connection between them simply by hearing a song or seeing a piece of clothing created by him.
